GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES ON TERRITORY OF MOLDOVA WILL BE WRITTEN IN ROMANIAN LANGUAGE

Geographical names on the territory of Moldova will be written in Romanian. The Parliament adopted on Friday in the second reading a law according to which this applies to natural elements, historical and cultural territories.

The aim of the new law is to ensure the standardization, use and protection of geographical names for the development and promotion of Moldova's natural, tourist, cultural and historical heritage.

According to the law, in areas inhabited by national minorities and if there is sufficient demand, geographical names will be indicated in Romanian and in the minority languages spoken by the inhabitants of these localities.

According to the new law, the National Commission on Geographical Names will be created - a collegial body with consultative status, created along with the Agency of Geodesy, Cartography and Cadastre. It will be composed of representatives delegated by the central public administration authorities, representative associations of local public administration authorities, the Executive Committee of ATU Gagauzia, academia and civil society. The Commission will be responsible for examining applications for geographical names and issuing conclusions on these applications. Also, the creation of the Information System "Register of geographical names" is envisaged.
