Hawaii skateboarders await this weekend's return of 'Hell of a Paradise'
WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Heads up, skateboarders: There's a must-attend event happening in Waikiki this Saturday.
Adidas Skateboarding and Thrasher Magazine will host a pro invitational jam-style skate session inspired by the historic 30-year anniversary of the "Y-Ramp" contest at the Neal Blaisdell Center.
Coined "Hell of a Paradise," in honor of the Thrasher Magazine article from 1989, the original mini-ramp was notorious for drawing some of the biggest names in skateboarding.
They include Mark Gonzales, whose famed front side ollie over the Y-Ramp's 12-foot channel shocked spectators and still stands as a feat recalled by modern skate historians today.
"Hell Of A Paradise" celebrates the deep skateboarding heritage of Hawaii, in both an homage to the past and present with notable pros bringing some of the best tricks in modern skateboarding to the iconic ramp.
The ramp is being built by by Tim Payne, founder and president of Team Pain Skate Parks, the same ramp architects who built the original Y-Ramp.
Want to go? It's all happening on the beach near the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Practice runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the contest goes from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
