'I'm overwhelmed with gratitude': Kerry Washington joins castmates and creator Shonda Rhimes in bidding Scandal farewell as series wraps

Scandal wrapped its seventh and last season in the small hours of Saturday morning.

And its leading lady Kerry Washington, who plays the canny Washington fixer Olivia Pope, bid the show a fond farewell on social media.

Kerry, 41, wrote on Twitter: 'Heading home. This was the most unforgettable FRATURDAY ever!!!!!!!! #Scandal I’m overwhelmed with gratitude.'

Shonda Rhimes, who created Scandal as well as such series as Grey's Anatomy and How To Get Away With Murder, tweeted a snapshot of the show's set.

'And that’s a series wrap on #Scandal. Could not be prouder. Here is a shot of the Truman Balcony created by our amazing production crew. Thank you to every single person in our #scandalfam who helped bring this show to life,' she wrote.

She had earlier tweeted: 'And that’s a wrap on #Scandal. A lot of tears. A lot of love. Forever grateful for every second.'

Scott Foley, who portrays National Security Agency director Jake Ballard, tweeted simply: 'To my #Scandal cast and crew, thank you. Thank you. Thank you.'

This last season began airing in October of last year, and has two episodes left to broadcast - one airing March 29 and the next on April 5.
